Last week's episode of "Grey's Anatomy" left me very excited to see where we'd go this week with two particular story lines - Kepner and the EMT and Karev and his new platonic lady friend. Naturally we didn't get to see either of those plots advance this week!
What we did see was Alana, the efficiency expert, spring into action in the ER. I still don't understand why she doesn't practice medicine anymore. I can't wait for that cat to come out of the bag.
This hour the attendings werre locked in a skills lab with a Dr. Nissbaum learning his method for hernia repair. Anyone else recognize this actor? He played Dean on "Weeds." He quickly fell out of favor with Bailey, Weber and the rest of the crew when he shouted, "The patients don't matter!"
Bailey made not one, but two "Hunger Games" references this episode, including the signature line, "May the odds be ever in your favor." Excellent!
There were two incredibly difficult patient stories tonight. First a gymnast who fell and had to have her hips replaced. At thirteen. Karev tries to get her out of bed and after a long rant she closes her argument by saying, "You would understand if you had ever been the best at something." Ouch. If only she knew how messed up Karev is already.
Towards the end of the episode, after Karev and Callie both failed to get the gymnast up, Arizona goes in. The patient quips, "They sent the cripple in to show me how to lead my life?" Why yes, yes they did. And it works.
The other patient comes in with his friend from the skateboarding shop and he's in critical condition. As they are about to treat him, Leah finds a bracelet that indicates he is a Jehovah's Witness, meaning - no blood transfusions. Leah is incredibly disturbed by this and tries to convince his parents to let him have the blood. Ultimately, she is so unglued that she tries to sneak him the blood. Too bad the new camera watch dog Alana installed catches her.
Towards the end of the episode Alana admits that she is preparing the hospital to be sold. She compares it to staging a home, "This ER is like a shag carpet, it has to go."
Owen closes the ER for the last time and Cristina is outside waiting for him. She offers to treat him to his first round of drinks. I kind of hate that they are divorced now!
Finally, Meredith felt her baby kick for the very first time tonight. In previews last week for tonight's episode they made it seem like something terrible happens to Meredith and the baby. Stop tricking us!
The previews for the February 7th episode show the doctors sneaking a young patient into the ER, even though it is supposed to be closed. We'll see what Alana and the watch dog cameras have to say about that!
